Originating as a woolstore warehouse, 45 Jones Street Ultimo is a commercial building encompassing three levels of car parking and four levels of commercial office space. Bates Smart was engaged to design the upgrade of the base building facilities including lifts, amenities and kitchens.Floor, wall and ceiling treatments to each level generally were assessed and included in the upgrade. The office levels were stripped back, exposing the original timber ceiling, beams and joists. In combination with the selection of simplistic finishes and treatments, this enhanced the original character of the building.
Simple use of colour in the lifts and amenities contrasts well with the neutral base palette, driven by the natural materials used in the original building.
The Entry Lobby design complements the original building fabric through the introduction of harder man-made materials and clean lines. The juxtaposition between old and the new materials provides a clean and minimal looking entry lobby that contributes to the arrival experience.
