Acute and Ambulatory Care Centre
Goulburn Valley Health, Shepparton, Victoria

Bates Smart prepared a masterplan for the Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Campus before undertaking the first built stage: a new Ambulatory Care Centre and Main Entrance, and the redevelopment and expansion of the Emergency Department.

The Acute and Ambulatory Care Centre provides a warm and welcoming modern entry to the campus, reinvigorating the image of this important regional hospital. The building is divided into three wings: the northern wing contains the front entry, café and office zone, the central wing houses the clinical support zone, and the southern wing is a clinical zone with consulting rooms on the ground floor and dental clinics on the first floor.

The design improves wayfinding and amenity, integrates outpatient and community services and provides a number of flexible planning strategies for expansion.

The Ambulatory Care Centre comprises: a twelve-chair dental clinic, specialist consulting suites, therapy and treatment rooms, administration facilities, a new front entrance and a commercial precinct. The Emergency Department includes: eight short-stay beds, dedicated mental health facilities, expanded patient waiting areas, dedicated paediatric facilities, upgraded isolation room facilities, resuscitation and trauma bays, an enlarged ambulance bay, a decontamination area and staff education facilities.

The building employs environmentally sustainable design principles that encompass natural and mechanical ventilation, double glazing with low thermal transfer properties, deep eaves, positive sun shading devices and operable windows. The louvred clerestory allows hot air release and brings natural light into the building.
