The existing Global Switch Building is a highly secure, highly serviced building for Data Centre type operations. Bates Smart was engaged to investigate the development opportunities on the site and explore options for converting the upper floors to conventional office. The proposed development provides a new commercial building integrated with the existing building without compromising existing security. The new building provides the entry, identity, and access to the upper level floors of the existing building. Central to this concept is the provision of a large atrium space connecting the two buildings.The atrium provides a focus for a campus style environment and accommodates the primary circulation. The dramatic volume creates a striking identity for the building and additional amenity for the occupants. The space is flooded with filtered natural light and enjoys natural ventilation. Cantilevered interconnecting stairs and glass bridges located at each end provide dramatic animation to the space. To complement the traditional office floors a number of ‘pods’ will be suspended within the space and used as meeting rooms or breakout spaces.
