Burnet Institute
Prahran, Melbourne

The Burnet Institute co-locates facilities from the former Austin Research Institute with the existing Burnet Building adjacent to the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP). Bates Smart has been involved with the project from functional briefing, feasibility, subsequent design and documentation phases.

The new Institute incorporates sophisticated flexible wet and dry research facilities, with modular laboratory spatial planning with generic PC2 laboratory support space associated with each generic laboratory. Each wet laboratory includes capability to accommodate a Tissue Culture Suite plus a write up/break up space immediately adjacent to the laboratory. Special provisions include a 300sqm PC3 laboratory suite with wet and dry research and an X Ray Crystallography Laboratory. The design incorporates future expansion within the 3,500sqm of space allowing for change in the ratio of wet to dry research space with in built future proofing for engineering systems for ease of change.

The design for dry research environments has been lead by our workplace design team, developing solutions which adopt contemporary workplace design trends with innovative breakout and social spaces to specifically encourage collaboration and discovery.
