Medical Foundation Building
University of Sydney, Parramatta, Sydney

The Medical Foundation Building is a new University of Sydney research facility focusing on functional genomics and bioinformatics. The building operates as a centre of multidisciplinary research to serve all campuses of the University including the Western, Northern and Central research hubs and faculties that have an interest in functional genomics and related fields of research. The Building also provides an interface between university-based research and research groups in the health sector and in industry.

The accommodation includes:
  • dedicated and generic wet and dry research laboratories
  • an animal holding facility
  • shared support facilities as well as teaching and seminar spaces

  • facilities for research groups in population genetics and genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, pharmacogenomics and proteomics

The Building contains platforms (technology and facilities) for research expertise in these fields as well as for DNA sequencing and RNA analysis (micro-arrays).

Project challenges included:
  • installing additional services into an existing multistorey commercial 1970’s building
  • zoning and connectivity across a small floor plate
  • maximising daylight penetration.
