City Freehold purchased this industrial site at 139-143 Parramatta Road, Camperdown in November 2008. Located 3km west of Sydney’s central business district, the site is the former home of the Fowler Pottery Works. It is well situated with excellent access to public transport, community facilities and mature parklands. Redevelopment will see construction of 191 new dwellings across 4 buildings including 2 heritage buildings, plus commercial and retail space, with extensive landscaped areas and integrated public improvements.

The project includes a new publicly accessible street and laneway, upgrades to surrounding streets, and extensive on-site landscaping. Two heritage buildings will be re-used and three new buildings are to be constructed. The new buildings are highly ordered but have a relaxed contemporary expression. Environmental responsiveness and occupants’ control of their environment are used to enhance the architectural character. Materials have been chosen to create a contrasting backdrop for the restored heritage buildings and to subtly reference the rich history of the site.

Bates Smart worked closely with City Freehold to tailor a broad range of housing choices with appeal for both investors and owner occupiers. The proposal signals a return to lifestyle, housing identity and flexibility. Dwelling types include studios, maisonettes, one and two bed open-plan layouts, garden apartments, penthouses and terrace houses. Each dwelling has been designed to capitalise on the site’s specific opportunities, adding maximum value. Site planning accommodates a range of options for construction staging.

Community briefing and consultation were undertaken, and Bates Smart were able to win strong support for this urban renewal venture. The project builds on our strong working relationship with City Freehold, established over a series of successful projects.
