Bates Smart was invited to enter a design competition for a seven-tower proposal on a unique linear site in central Shanghai, with the provision of lavish community facilities at the ground plane.

Through the exploration of an ‘urban resort’ notion, the aim was to capture the rich culture of Shanghai without relying on literal themes prevalent in surrounding developments.

The design employed traditional notions of precinct and movement through hierarchical spaces. Built forms were developed in a more conceptual state with the articulation of towers seen as an organic virtue. The layering of façades fragmented predominantly horizontal expressions of surface and allowed for solar gain. The ground plane consisted of three elements creating an empowering sensory experience of landscape:
> A linear water ribbon
> A linear tree corridor
> An arbor

These elements follow serpentine paths across the site providing visual consistency responsive to the individual buildings and a unifying architectural dialogue.
