Goodman Head Office
Bates Smart was commissioned to design Goodman’s new head offices in Castlereagh Street, Sydney following a competitive design selection process.
Goodman is a publicly listed development and property management company with a focus on the Asia Pacific Region and a highly mobile workforce. Having successfully emerged from the GFC their leadership team was ready to embrace the future and drive change. After an intensive briefing and consultation process, Goodman sought a new workplace model based on Activity Based Workplace principles (ABW) and also accommodated future growth.
Bates Smart’s design adopts the principles of ABW with unallocated seating for staff, no permanent desk storage and a clean desk policy. Critical to the success of any ABW design, and for Goodman, are support functions, including:
- A series of quiet zones (telephone/escape rooms and library zones) for confidential and/or high concentration work
- Temporary document storage units for current files, and centralised long term file storage
- A significant number of informal meeting rooms for staff, including a number of ‘War Rooms’ for intensive team based work
- Mobile technology, including laptops for staff with interface/docking stations, Wi-Fi connectivity, ‘follow me’ printing, and instant messaging.
To enhance collaboration and flatten hierarchy the best views were allocated to staff work areas. An open stair adjacent to reception connects the staff breakout and meeting rooms allowing vertical and horizontal connectivity.
The design reflects Goodman’s values of integrity, transparency, efficiency, and collegiality. This project also demonstrates that ABW principles may be applied to smaller scale workplaces and achieved with a more restrained timeless aesthetic than is often associated with ABW.
