66 Hunter Street Sydney wins award

Bates Smart won an Interior Architecture Commendation for
66 Hunter Street, the home of Rockpool Bar & Grill and Spice Temple, at the 2010 AIA NSW Chapter Awards.

Jury Citation: “Emil Sodersten’s landmark 1936 Hunter Street building, which housed the former City Mutual Society’s banking chamber and a utilitarian basement space, were transformed into two unique dining experiences, responding to different briefs, menus and base building spaces. Spice Temple draws on the Sydney tradition of vibrant and mysterious entertainment spaces and reflects the mystery of the East. Materials in the entry areas are raw and textured, referencing the hawker’s markets of Asia and contrasting with the dining area of richness, sound absorption and, lighting that is more contrasting and intense. Rockpool Bar & Grill’s concept is founded on a celebration of the heritage space and volume to create a dining room of grand scale that can be both intimate and spectacular. Screens, lighting and ‘glass’ chandeliers were introduced, which defined the spaces but still enabled views within the volume. These projects reflect sensitivity and respect with minimal intervention and clever use of appropriately themed detail.”
