Roger is the executive Chairman of Bates Smart, and one of Australia’s most effective urban and architectural designers. He is a very strong strategic and conceptual architect, committed to an innovative and enduring approach to architecture. He works closely with an exceptionally talented team of outstanding younger design architects to create increasingly innovative buildings which reflect the needs and dynamics of contemporary urban life. Roger understands that highly innovative buildings must also be very functional, appropriately flexible and must be designed to stand the test of time. With fellow Director Kristen Whittle, Roger leads the design of buildings within the Melbourne studio.
Roger has contributed, on a probono basis, to the work and governance of the Committee for Melbourne, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the Property Council of Australia, and one of Melbourne’s leading independent schools.
Roger has a strong focus on strategic leadership and the creation of collaborative teams empowered to achieve outstanding results. The culture of Bates Smart reflects his concern to identify, develop and empower talented younger leaders so that the practice can adapt, grow and endure.
