Simon holds degrees in both Architecture and Building. Following several years in the construction industry working both on site and as a construction manager he returned to University to study architecture. The practice became highly respected working in the residential, commercial and institutional sectors. The practice’s philosophies were based on thorough research leading to design solutions that not only met the needs of the building owners and users but also responded to their aspirations and dreams. The work sought to avoid the excesses of fashion by creating timeless quality through the honest expression of structure and materials. During its 17 years the practice received numerous awards for its work.
Notably the practice was involved in a wide range of educational projects for which it was initially commissioned through design competition. The success of these projects in masterplanning, research and design led to the practice being engaged on a wide range of tasks in this sector.
Through his work for two of the Directors of Bates Smart on various projects and with shared philosophies Simon joined the firm as a director in 2005. He brings to the practice a commitment to the design of rational, efficient buildings which are responsive to the client’s needs, environmentally responsive and of timeless quality and beauty.
